More Summer, Less Monday

More summer, less Monday has been my life motto the last few weeks but this week really feels like summer is over. We spent our last weekend at the beach that will allow for bikinis and sunburn. Next time we go will be Thanksgiving and we will have sweatshirts on. Which will still be great, but not summer. At least we sent this weekend out in style.

I am starting this weekend recap on Thursday. It was opening night for the NFL and our beloved Panthers were playing. We had about a dozen friends over to watch the game and eats lots of yummy tailgate food. It was a great night, right up until the final score.

Friday was a work from home day for me. Greensboro was hosting a big-deal National Folk Festival and since my office is right downtown in the midst of the crazy we were encouraged to work from home. It was great since I was able to do laundry and pack at the same time as work after a late night of watching football. Right at 5 p.m. I hopped in the car and headed to the beach to meet my in-laws and Will’s cousin Caitlyn for the weekend. Will had to work, and I definitely felt bad about leaving him behind, but I couldn’t resist the urge to get in one last beach weekend. Friday night was the first night we have spent apart since we got married and it was definitely a little weird. We both travel for work, so this was inevitable, but the first one still felt strange.

I got to the beach around 8:30 and we spent the night sitting on the deck listening to the waves. I was wiped from the drive and went to bed pretty early but my in-laws went for a stroll on the beach and ran in to some volunteers guarding a sea turtle nest just a few steps down from our house. They came back and Caitlyn and I we would have to go back tomorrow and see if they had hatched yet.

Saturday was a great day on the beach, reading, relaxing, and then heading out for a yummy seafood dinner and watching the sun set at our favorite spot. You can see it all in my Blogtember: Day In the Life post.

At the end of the night we decided to go down and see the sea turtle volunteers and sure enough we got there right as the nest was hatching. It was so cool to see them all racing to the water and trying to swim out! We weren’t allowed to take any photos or video because they confuse the light from the phone for the moon. You will just have to trust me that 73 baby sea turtles is the cutest thing in the entire world.

Sunday we spent a few more hours at the beach before showering and packing up to head home. We all made it home in time to have dinner with Will and get some much needed rest for the week. It was an awesome weekend and I can never get enough beach time. Having in-laws with a beach house is definitely awesome. I can’t wait for Thanksgiving there this year, our first one as a married couple!

Hope everyone else had a great weekend too! We have a ton going on this week and I am trying not to fall off the Blogtember bandwagon so expect tons of content (I hope!).

College Football Opening Weekend

Happy (late) Monday! I hope everyone had a great long weekend and enjoyed Labor Day. This weekend basically started on Thursday for me and was a total joy. I am so not ready to go back to work tomorrow. Being a grown up is really over rated!

On Thursday I raced home from work so we could make it to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons season opener. The Deacs won, the rain held off and I got to see some of my dear friends who I used to work with. It was a great night. But the late night sure made me sleepy at work on Friday.

After work on Friday I drove over to a college volleyball game to see one a student-athlete I used to work with. She is such a sweetheart and transferred to a school in Ohio so I haven’t seen her in a while. It was so great to give her a big hug!

Saturday morning I headed back to another volleyball game to see a group of girls I used to work with before I switched jobs. They are all seniors now and it makes me feel old. But getting a big old group hug from them filled my heart right up! I am so proud of the incredible young women they have grown in to. Please note I am neither short nor fat but I sure look it when in the middle of a bunch of college volleyball players!

After volleyball I headed to the Elon football game. Will was working but I knew enough people there to entertain myself at the tailgates and had a great time hanging out until Will’s parents got there right at kickoff. Will’s bossman and his wife recently had their second baby as did our friends Whitney and Gray. How sweet are these baby girls? They both loved their first (of many) college football games as both their daddys work with Will.

Will was pretty beat after working football all day Saturday so we took it pretty easy on Sunday. We slept in and laid around watching TV for most of the day. After dinner we went over to his parents house for s’mores around the fire pit in their backyard. It cooled down just enough this weekend to make that perfect.

Unfortunately Will had to work on Monday so I spent the day cleaning, including pulling everything out of my closet and getting rid of stuff and reorganizing. I forgot to take a before and after picture but I was pretty darn proud of myself. Then Will’s mom and I went shopping for things for a wedding shower we are throwing friends in October.

Overall it was a great long weekend. Hope none of you labored to hard on Labor Day!

Weekend Slow Down

This weekend was enjoyed at a much slower speed than any I can remember in a while. It was nice to relax and not have every moment planned for a change. Because of Will’s job cranking up to include nights and weekends again, he had to work Saturday, we always try and cram as much fun as possible in to the summer because the weekends aren’t ours during the school year. But it also leads to some end of summer burnout because we never really relaxed. Every summer we say we will do better. And every summer we don’t. Maybe next year.

On Friday we just hung out and watched the Panthers/Patriots preseason game. It certainly didn’t go the way this Panthers fan wanted but it is just the preseason. Which I had to gently remind my husband… repeatedly.

Saturday Will had to work and I have another baby shower to go to. This one was for the wife of someone I used to work with. It was fun to catch up with people I used to see every day but haven’t gotten to spend much time with lately. Also they are having a little girl, where I feel like all my other friends are having boys, so it was sweet to see all the little girl clothes and the amazing nursery. My friend hand painted this! How incredible.

After Will got home on Saturday we grilled up burgers and finished watching Stranger Things. If you haven’t watched it get on Netflix right now. It is so good and totally not something I would have watched on my own. Not really my normal genre, but I am so glad the hubby made me watch it with him because I really enjoyed it. I need them to confirm season 2!

We also got some not-great news this weekend. One of our best friends was driving to Ohio to visit his parents on Thursday when he was hit by a drunk driver less than 20 minutes from his house. He has a concussion, but is otherwise fine, but his truck it totaled. He woke up in the hospital with zero recollection of what happened which is super scary. He ended up having to fly back to NC yesterday so we picked him up from the airport. He isn’t cleared to drive so Will has to bring him to work and he lives alone so I am just generally worried about him. So say a little prayer as he continues to heal and deal with the legal/insurance madness ahead.

Sunday we went to church, picked our friend up from the airport and did some grocery shopping/cleaning of the house. I thought it was going to be a totally chill day when Will told me to get in the shower and get cleaned up. I did as I was told and was rewarded with a delicious dinner at one of our favorite restaurants to celebrate three months of being married. I swear, that guy gets the importance of celebrating the little things! It was delicious and we had so much fun just chatting and enjoying the beautiful restaurant. I should have taken photos but mostly I forgot because I was just enjoying myself and even left my phone in the car.

So there it is, our very unplugged, no photo weekend. Sometimes that is just what we need.

A Tee-riffic Weekend

Happy Monday! This weekend is always one of my favorite of the year when my town hosts a PGA Tour event, The Wyndham Championship, and a ton of professional golfers come to town. It is so much fun to watch them up close and personal! But I should probably start at the beginning of the weekend.

On Friday I raced home from work, packed a great picnic dinner and we headed out to a new park that opened a few weeks ago for an outdoor movie night with some friends. We went to see Inside Out, which we had all already seen but it is just as good again. I packed chicken salad, cheese, pepperoni and crackers, fruit salad, veggies and hummus and chips and salsa. We feasted and watched the movie and had a great time. It did start raining a little toward the end of the movie but we just toughed it out since it was almost over. It was such a fun night and I am so glad they opened this new park. The programming they have planned is great.

The picture in the top right is this amazing art installation that did at the new park that hangs above your head and lights up at night. It is stunning and that photo definitely doesn’t do it justice.

Will had to work on Saturday but I had two tickets to the Wyndham from work. I invited a friend of mine who I don’t get to see as often as I used to when we had offices next door to each other. Even though he is a huge sports fan he had never been to a professional golf event. I loved getting to show him around a great course and follow some of our favorite golfers.

Jay (left) and I had a great day catching up and ran in to Josh (right) who we also used to work with.

This was a really fun year because Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Bill Haas, Webb Simpson, Luke Donald, Patrick Reed and a bunch more really famous guys were playing. This event is always toward the end of the golf season so some of the more famous guys take the weekend off to rest up. It is always fun to see who is actually coming. Last year Tiger Woods played in it, which caused just enough of a rush to buy tickets that we decided to stay home. We had seen Tiger in his prime and decided that it wasn’t worth the madness to see bad Tiger.

On Sunday Will and I went out to the Wyndham for the fourth time in our five years together. Like I said, we skipped last year, but it is so great that we have this tradition. We met up with some friends early in the day and then spent the afternoon with Will’s Dad. As a wine/beer provider for the tournament he always has suite access with free food and drinks so we hung out there in the afternoon and watched the leaders play through.

Naturally we were zapped from two days of walking around in the hot, hot heat so Sunday night was pretty low key. We ordered pizza, watched the closing ceremony of the Olympics and I fell asleep on the couch before 10!

This was really my last weekend with Will before his job kicks in to high gear for the school year (that will get its own post this week) so we tried to make the most of it for sure.

Is anyone else a golf lover like me?

Come Back Summer!

Hey June and July, please come back, please?!? Seriously I have no clue where those months went but I would love for them to come back. This weekend was our last before my husband’s job on a college campus kicks in to high gear and he works most weekends. In fact he has to work this coming Saturday so this past weekend was it. Now in the past I also had to work all those Saturdays but with the new job I strictly work Monday-Friday so I will have to start figuring out what to do when he is gone all day!

This weekend was a little all over the place. Friday was super low key. We hung out at the house and watched the Olympics. Because I can’t get enough. Seriously.

I didn’t set an alarm on Saturday for the first time in months and it was glorious. And I did something I never do, slept past 9 a.m. Who knew I was still capable? Anyway, I got up and got to work cleaning off the table in our kitchen. When we bought the house two years ago we put Will’s old high top table in our kitchen and my dining room set in the dining room. Well, I knew very early his table wasn’t staying in the kitchen. It was too big and we never sat at it. It just became a giant mail pile. Last week Wayfair was having a huge sale so I ordered this adorable kitchen cart and was so excited to get some space back in my tiny kitchen. On Saturday I cleaned off the table, gave it a good cleaning and posted it on Craigslist. It sold within 2 hours!

After we got it sold Will and his dad opened the box to the new kitchen cart to start putting it together. Well, just my luck, the counter top came with a big old crack in it. So I called Wayfair and they are sending me a new one. But for now there is a big empty space in my kitchen.

Saturday continued with dinner with Will’s parents at our favorite greek restaurant and then we went to see Jim Gaffigan. The show was hilarious but let me tell you outdoor shows in August in North Carolina are rough. It was HOT. Will’s dad got us great seats and Jim Gaffigan even did the Hot Pocket sketch I love so much as his encore. A great night!

Sunday was full of grocery shopping, meal prep for the week and more Olympics! I tried out a new recipe for a peach pound cake that was delicious too! Please excuse my husband’s finger in the picture. It was late and I didn’t realize his finger was there until he had already cut out a big piece to eat! #reallife

The Wedding and Baby Phase of Life

Happy Monday! Hope everyone feels better rested than I do. This Olympic coverage has me staying up way past my bed time. But I can’t seem to rip myself away. It is so good! How about the men’s relay last night?!? I was cheering so hard. I always forget how much fun it is to cheer on the USA in the Olympics.

Anyway, back to the weekend. It was a good one but one where I can’t help but sit back and laugh at how every weekend seems to have some sort of wedding or baby event. Welcome to your (almost) 30s!

The college school year is about to start back which means Will is going to be working a lot more, later and on weekends. It used to be that I also worked those hours but since I made the career switch in March this will be the first year that I have to adjust to being home while Will works. Friday was our first night like that. So I went to the gym, tried a new zumba class and loved my instructor. Then went to the grocery store and came home to cook dinner and watch the Opening Ceremony until Will got home. It will certainly be an adjustment but I do love some quiet/alone time so hopefully it won’t be too bad.

Saturday morning we were up and out the door early to pick up my mother-in-law and head to a baby shower for the wife of one of Will’s best friends. Will was the best man in their wedding and we are so excited for our little nephew! When we picked up Will’s mom we laughed at the fact that we were wearing the same outfit! No time to change so off we went. When we got to the shower one of my close friends, Samantha, was already there, also wearing the same outfit. White pants and navy tops for the win!

The boys went off for a day on the lake and we ate lunch, played games and watched Lauren open all her gifts. We had so much fun straying from the registry and buying him his first basketball hoop! It may be some time before he can use it but we can’t wait to play basketball with him! I also got him the sweetest rattle in the shape of North Carolina with his name on it from Bannor Toys. If you all need a shower gift you should go buy one. Everyone was asking where I got it and I could tell Lauren loved it. She is in the middle of the photo below. She is two in October and you can’t even tell she is pregnant! She is so tiny!

Sunday morning started with a great church service. It was the last day of Vacation Bible School and it was so fun to see the kiddos play the instruments we made, sing the songs we learned and laugh and giggle. Our Pastor is also the best and had props for his sermon, knowing he would need to entertain all these kids! He had a fishing pole, golf club and his dog! Definitely one of the best sermons of the year.

Then we once again picked up Will’s mom and headed to a coffee shop to meet another of Will’s good friends, his wife and his mom to plan the wedding shower of the last of Will’s closest friends. The four guys will all be married come December and we have all come together to throw showers for each other. I can’t wait for this shower in October. We are going with a fall theme, pumpkins and cider and pretty fall decorations. I can’t wait!

All the activities had us pretty wiped out on Sunday night so we ate leftovers and watched Olympic coverage. I can’t get enough and I am going to have to start making myself turn it off and go to bed earlier or I will be useless for the next two weeks!

We Are Giants

Happy Monday! No lie, I am exhausted. We packed this weekend right to the brim with fun and a major thunder storm kept us up way past my bed time last night so everything is moving a little slow this morning. But I still want to share all the fun!

Friday was a double date night with one of my best friends. She lived in NC, where we met when we used to work together. Then she took a job in Georgia for a few years and just recently moved back up here. And this week her boyfriend made the move up here too so we went out Friday to celebrate. We headed to one of my favorite spots in town, Crafted. And the artwork outside cracked me up!

Saturday Will golfed in the morning so I did some shopping. I made homemade ice cream last week and it has been stored in my loaf pan. Not ideal. So I went out and found these adorable ice cream containers at Sur la Table. IMG_5892After Will got home, and showered (because golf when it is 100 degrees outside makes for a gross smell) we headed to see some friends who just had their second baby. Her name is Salem and she is just under a month old. She is so cute and I just couldn’t get enough baby! Her 2-year-old brother “little Will” is also one of my favorite kids and we had a great time playing while I gave others a (short) turn holding Salem!

Next we headed to dinner with one of Will’s best friends and his wife. We tried this new bbq place, Camel City, that was made even cooler by the arcade inside. I challenged my husband to skeeball and lost. Will’s best friend and his wife are expecting their first child in October. We found out right before the wedding and with all the craziness going on this was the first time we really got to celebrate.

And finally, the best part! On Sunday we drove to see one of my all-time favorite artists in concert. I have seriously seen Matt Nathanson more than a dozen times and every time I love it more. His songs are just so happy. Last night he played one of his songs that I hadn’t heard in a while and reminded us that we control our happiness and we don’t have to let the happenings of the world get us down.

The world don’t speak for us. They lack the confidence
Yeah, we’re only hearts and bones and blood.
But we are giant. Giants

He came out in the crowd for one song and came right to where we were sitting. And touched my shoulder! I fan-girled so hard. And my sweet husband captured it all!

Here is the absolute best part! After the show it started to storm really bad so we couldn’t stay for the meet and greet like we planned. We had a 90-minute drive home and this was some serious lightning. So I tweeted at Matt and he responded! Matt tends to be a little … explicit … in his concerts which is part of what I love. This was an all ages concert so he used camping as a euphemism for sex and it had the adults in the crowd absolutely cracking up. So #camping.

I was so happy I didn’t even care that I couldn’t go to the meet and greet. We got all the way home to learn that Will’s parents, who were supposed to get home at 7:30 still weren’t home because of all the storms. They were flying back from Seattle, got stuck in Atlanta for hours, were supposed to land in Greensboro but the flight got redirected to Raleigh. We had just been in Raleigh for the concert! We stopped at their house, fed the dog and took him out, and then waited to see if we needed to turn around and get them. Luckily the airline gave them a voucher for a cab ride back to Greensboro. I don’t want to think about the cost of that but at least we didn’t have to go get them! They didn’t get home until 2:45 am. Either way I am tired this morning!

Thank goodness for coffee and all your wonderful Monday posts to give me a little motivation this morning!
